Embrace your versatility – Tips to ensure your business operates efficiently

How many hats do you wear at any one time?
Quite a few, I imagine.
Being a business owner can present excitement and challenge, and there’s a feel-good rush when you are able to overcome an obstacle, look back on the hurdle and say, ‘I did it!’
A juggling act to be proud of
With many things to juggle, there’s a constant need for adaptability and versatility.
Knowing first-hand how difficult it can be to constantly change hats and represent all that needs doing in your business, here’s a shout-out to all you amazing business owners juggling many balls in your professional and personal lives.
I’m very much a work in progress and love learning from those more well-versed than me – of which there are many!
Tips for new business owners
At a networking event recently, I was asked what advice I would offer people going into business. Now, I’ve only been a business owner since October 2020, so were by no stretch the best person in the room to ask. Still, I offered my answer to try and help…
Develop your contact book, chat with as many people as possible and look to collaborate with others – this could be in the form of a service-swap if cashflow is a stumbling block.
Outsourcing is great, too. Granted, it comes with an attached cost, but spend what you have wisely and you’ll soon reap the benefits of doing business with others.
The prime example of this for me is with the self-assessment tax return. Far too much time and energy was being sapped by me doing something I’m not good at, so the decision to outsource this to a trained accountant saved me many hours (and much stress!) to be able to concentrate on running my business.
When was the last time you gave thought to such things?
Listening and learning
Do you:
- know your network
- ask questions and learn from others
- see link-ups as a strength?
Nobody can know everything. Chat to other business owners and you will not only help yourself, but many more people in the process.

“spend what you have wisely” – I LOVE this, Craig but only because I have been spending unwisely and faffing around in business since 2009 #maykingmistakes
We all have those imposter moments from time to time. It’s part of the human condition and we’re in great company! Michelle Obama has talked about it, Lady Gaga, Dawn French and many greats! The next time we experience one of those moments, reflect on it, learn from its lesson and move forward. That would be my advice to entrepreneurs.
Great article, Craig.
